Slim Down & Shape Up with Tomato Juice

At the beginning of each year, there is one new year’s resolution that remains the most prevalent lose weight and/or eat healthier. According to a new study, adding tomato juice to your diet can help!

Tomatoes have many healthy benefits. They are good for your skin, hair, eyes, heart, and bones. They are filled with antioxidants and vitamins, such as Vitamin A and C. They help to repair damage to the body caused by smoking and aid in preventing several types of cancers due to their high content of the antioxidant, Lycopene.

Lycopene is a natural antioxidant that gives fruits and vegetables their beautiful, vibrant red color. It is the most powerful naturally occurring antioxidant in the world!

A study was done at China Medical University in Taiwan that revolved around the health benefits of tomato juice. The study included 30 women between the ages of 20-30 years old. Their BMI’s (Body Mass Index) were 20 or above. A BMI of 18.5 – 24.9 is considered healthy for women of this age group.

Each participant was asked to eat and exercise as they normally do. The only stipulation was that they were required to add approximately 8 oz of tomato juice to their diets each day for a total of 2 months.

A commonality within the fat tissue of those who are obese is chronic inflammation. After the 2-month study cycle, the researchers found a 22% decrease in MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein). MCP-1 is one of these chemicals that causes inflammation in the fat tissue! Not only did the tomato juice significantly decrease MCP-1, it also lowered a hormone (adiponectin) that manages sensitivity to insulin by 25%!

In closing the study the researchers stated: These results show that daily tomato juice supplementation reduces waist circumference, as well as serum cholesterol and inflammatory adipokine (the insulin regulating hormone) levels in young healthy women and that these effects are unrelated to body fat changes.”

A truly incredible study! So, if one of your new year’s resolutions for 2017 is to slim down and shape up or simply eat healthier, adding a small portion of tomato juice to your liquids each day is certainly worth a try, and of course, organic is always the better option if you are able!
